It is an independent institute and a part of the Malla Reddy Group of Institutions which was established by Sri. Ch. Malla Reddy. The college is a subsidiary to Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad. The college is recognised by University Grants Commission (UGC) and accredited by the NBA and National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with a grade 'A'. MREC was given autonomous status by JNTUH in 2011 and by UGC in 2014 for a time of 6 years. Malla Reddy Engineering College has nine departments some of which are the Department of Humanities and Sciences, Department of Information Technology, Department of Mining, Department of Mechanical Engineering and so on. The MREC courses are offered in undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the field of architecture and engineering, computer application and IT, management and business organisation and sciences. The admission is carried out every year by the dedicated MREC admission cell. The candidates have to appear in the TS EAMCET exam for B.Tech, TS-PGECET exam for M.Tech and TS-ICET exam for MBA admissions.The MREC placement cell works in association with the major companies who participate in the placement drives of the college.
